Psychology

York’s graduate program in Psychology is the largest in Canada and one of the country’s most diverse.

Seven areas of specialization and numerous opportunities for interdisciplinary study and research institute participation offer MA and PhD students wide-ranging possibilities for academic investigation and professional training. Our programs provide a broad foundation in the principles and methods of behavioural science through coursework, research experiences and considerable field experience.

The program has been very successful in attracting support for its research, and currently holds more than $13 million in external research funding. Our graduate students also have excellent track records in winning competitive scholarships.

Topics of interest are broad and encompass these areas: Brain, Behaviour & Cognitive Science, Developmental Science, History and Theory of Psychology, Quantitative Methods, Social and Personality, Clincal (Adult) Psychology and Clinical-Developmental Psychology.

The Psychology Department is also home to a state-of-the art community mental health and training clinic, providing a range of leading-edge, effective mental health services to keep people of all ages living healthy, productive lives.

Our graduates are trained to become excellent researchers, opening up a wealth of career options. Graduates are well suited for positions in academia, teaching, research institutes, government, rehabilitation and social service agencies.

Our two clinical areas (Adult Clinical and Clinical-Developmental) involve training as scientist-practitioners. Programs are accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association, and graduates typically seek professional registration/licensure and work in clinical practice in various settings (hospitals, agencies, private practice).
