York’s Administrative Studies program is one of the largest undergraduate business programs in Canada, offering you a range of choice and flexibility.

This program is offered as a Bachelor of Administrative Studies and a BAS Specialized Honours in Information Technology (BAS ITEC).

All of the BAS programs focus on how to apply theory to real-world situations, using a variety of methods including multimedia presentations, seminars, case studies and visits from prestigious guest speakers. With the help of our expert faculty, you will sharpen your critical-thinking, analytic, communication and leadership skills.

Broaden your career horizons in our BAS and BAS Specialized Honours program by specializing in one of the following areas:

  • Accounting
    • Our program offerings include our popular BAS accounting honours degree and an accounting certificate. These programs prepare you for various fields of accountancy, including public practice, controllership, and general managerial accounting. They also provide excellent preparation for the Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified General Accountant (CGA) designations.  Honours students in this specialization can take part in the Certified Management Accountants Internship Program, established with seed funding from Certified Management Accountants of Ontario (CMA Ontario). In this program, you will take on one or more full-time paid internship positions – ranging from four to 16 months in duration – between your third and fourth years of university.

  • Business Research
    • Reliable data and research are critical to the effective management of businesses and organizations. In addition to building a solid foundation in general business and management practices, the program will provide you with specialized knowledge in survey design, data collection and interpretation, quantitative measure and market and decision analysis. You will take courses in marketing, research, critical decision-making and information systems design. As a graduate of the Business Research stream, you will be qualified to pursue a variety of interesting careers in the private and public sectors, from market research or analysis to business or strategic planning.

  • Finance
    • Finance is an essential part of managing any organization, large or small, and is also essential to helping families plan their own financial future. The program teaches you how to manage the financial affairs of a company and to work in corporate finance. You will learn personal financial planning and investment analysis to work in wealth management careers and to help you get the CFA or CFP designation. You also learn critical skills such as law, marketing, accounting, business strategy and human resource management that you will need anywhere you work. Graduates can go on to work as corporate financial managers, financial planners, investment adviser s or investment portfolio managers.

  • Human Resources Management
    • Gain both a solid foundation in general business and management practices. You will also develop specialized skills and knowledge in a wide range of Human Resources-related issues such as workplace productivity, labour-management relations, hiring, compensation, retention and safety & equity issues. Prepare for a career as a labour-relations specialist, corporate recruiter, Human Resources systems analyst or training professional.

  • Management
    • Effective leadership is critical to the smooth operation of all organizations and businesses. In this stream you will learn the principles of effective management that reflect the diverse scope and varied responsibility of modern management. You'll gain general knowledge in a variety of areas, including marketing, human resources management, financial management, strategic planning and general management practices from the perspective of small (including entrepreneurial), medium and large organizations and companies. As a graduate of this stream, you will be prepared to pursue a range of careers, including business direction, entrepreneurship or business development consulting.

  • Management Science
    • The Management Science stream will prepare you both academically and professionally to address the unique and complex issues organizations face in their short-term and long-terms strategic planning. You will develop a strong foundation in quantitative methods as well as in operations and logistics management.

  • Marketing
    • Today’s businesses depend on the creativity and expertise of marketing professionals to effectively promote their products. The Marketing stream provides you with the skills and knowledge needed in this fast-paced and challenging field. Through in-class lectures, case studies and simulations, you'll gain both theoretical and practical knowledge in all aspects of the marketing process including product management, advertising and communications, market research and strategies, retailing, international markets and consumer behaviour

The Bachelor of Administrative Studies in Information Technology (BAS ITEC) is unique in Administrative Studies, blending information management with business. You'll take courses in applied computer networks, systems design and principles.

Stand out to future employers by completing one of three streams:

  • Business Systems Analysis: will prepare you for a career as an information technology analyst, systems analyst or information technology consultant.
  • E-Commerce Development: gives you the technical knowledge required for the design and development of consumer and business-to-business electronic commerce systems.
  • Information Technology Auditing & Assurance: responds to the growing demand for information system audit, control and security professionals. This stream was developed in close consultation with the Information Systems Audit and Control Association and will be of interest to students seeking the certified Information Systems Auditor designation.

  • Add a minor in business to any Honours program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, as well as programs in the Faculty of Health and the Faculty of Science & Engineering.
