Note:

Portuguese Studies at York is one of only two degrees of its kind in Canada.

York’s Portuguese Studies program, covering not only the Portuguese language but also the culture, history and literature associated with the language, focuses Portugal as well as the entire Lusophone world across four continents: Europe, Africa, South American and Asia. Through courses such as Aspects of Contemporary Portugal: Culture and Cinema and Discovery and Conquest: The Age of Camões, you will learn about and engage with a diversity of cultures - their art, literature, history and social and political landscapes.

The Portuguese language is the sixth most widely used language in the world, spoken daily by 220 million people. Its study will prepare you for work globally, offering you instant entry to Portugal, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guiné Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe, Macau, East Timor and Goa.

Upon graduation, you will be ready to enter a variety of careers, particularly those related to globalization, foreign services, business and international development. Since the Portuguese language is the sixth most widely used language in the world spoken daily by 220 million people, our program will prepare you for work almost anywhere in the world.
