Language Proficiency Requirements
If you are applying to an undergraduate program at York, you may meet our English language requirements if you have successfully completed - or are in the process of successfully completing - one of the following:
- four full years of study in Canada in English or French at the secondary-school level;
- four full years of study at the secondary-school level in English in a country where English is a primary language or where English is the primary language of instruction;
- one full year of study in an accredited university degree program in English in a country where English is a primary language;
- two full years of study in English in an accredited college diploma/applied degree program in a country where English is a primary language or where English is the primary language of instruction.
Students who have completed, or are in the process of completing, the International Baccalaureate diploma may meet our English language requirements. Students must show achievement of the IB diploma once it's been granted.
Note: Time spent in ESL courses will not be counted towards meeting these requirements. Language requirements will not be waived based on letters written by applicants or as a result of completing senior-level high-school English course(s).
The above requirements are general guidelines only. York University reserves the right to require a successfully completed language proficiency test.
If you are in doubt about whether you meet our language requirements, submit an acceptable English language test score as soon as possible to avoid potential delays in the processing of your application for admission.
Applicants to the Faculty of Education
Applicants to the consecutive teacher education program (BEd Consecutive) must satisfy English language proficiency requirements.
The results of an English language proficiency test must be no more than two years old as of November 30, 2008. The language proficiency test requirement will be waived for applicants whose mother tongue or first language is English or who have studied full-time for at least two years (or equivalent in part-time studies) at an accredited university where the language of instruction and examination is English and which is located in a country where the first language is officially English. In countries, such as India or Pakistan, where students may study in English at university, English is considered their working language but not necessarily their official language and these applicants are required to submit English language proficiency test results.
Proof of an acceptable level of proficiency in oral and written English is required. The results of an English language proficiency test must be no more than two years old as of November 30, 2008. For specific details, visit www.yorku.ca/foe.
