About Program Degrees Offered and Application Requirements

The Master of Design (MDes) program is a two-year, practice-based program that investigates cultural, social, and technological dimensions of design, information design, interaction design, motion graphics and design studies within the parameters of Communication Design. It prepares graduates for careers as designers, design theorists/researchers and educators by engaging students in design practice, theory, methodology, research as well as in design thinking and strategies of critical making.

The program offers strongly supportive design studies courses that provide a foundation for doctoral studies in the rapidly developing area of Design Research.

The program embraces intellectually curious students interested in experimental and investigative approach to design practice, theory and research in Communication Design.

    Because the number of applicants greatly exceeds the number of positions available, meeting our minimum admission requirements is not a guarantee of admission.
    We encourage all applicants to submit complete documentation (including those submitted via MyFile - supplementary applications and referee recommendations) within two weeks of the application deadline. Review the Admissions process for timing.

    Completed Application Package means:

    1. Use York University's graduate studies online application
    2. Upload the required and supplementary documents and materials permitted for submission through MyFile. All other required documentation submitted by mail must be sent in a single package.
    Exception: official transcripts sent to York directly from previous educational institutions. Official transcripts must come directly from, and bear the unbroken seal of, the issuing institution.
