Program focus is a unique combination of theory and practice. The MA option offers studies in Cinema & Medial Studies; the MFA option offers studies in Screenwriting and Production.

Our professors and staff are active participants in the Canadian and international worlds of movie-making and film studies. Together with our students, we are an integral part of the Toronto film community.

During first term, you may take courses in all three streams: Production, Screenwriting, Cinema & Media Studies.

York’s Sound & Moving Images Library (SMIL) — one of the largest collections of films, videos and DVDs in the country– is an invaluable resource for all film students.

York’s Scott Library offers thousands of books, journals and periodicals pertaining to film, including a large collection of screenplays.

You’ll be closely connected to Toronto’s vibrant film scene, with research centres like the Toronto International Film Festival Group Film Reference Library, more than 100 film festivals (including TIFF), and production companies and co-ops that provide opportunities and connections to help launch careers.

York Production students gain access to extensive production facilities and computing equipment.
