The Schulich PhD program is designed to guide you from advanced learning to original discovery through four closely integrated phases. You’ll begin with rigorous coursework that builds deep expertise in your field, followed by a comprehensive examination that showcases your mastery of the discipline. From there, you’ll develop and defend a formal research proposal, culminating in a doctoral dissertation that contributes new knowledge to your field.

From your very first term, you’re encouraged to explore and refine your research interests. Scholarly growth is a defining feature of the program, with strong emphasis on presenting at conferences and publishing alongside faculty members and fellow doctoral students. This collaborative, research-intensive environment prepares you to become a confident, independent scholar.

The PhD program is offered on a full-time basis and begins each September. Students are required to study full-time for at least the first two years, and maintaining full-time status is essential to remain eligible for funding.
