York University is committed to student mobility and is happy to welcome Canadian university transfer students.
As soon as you are admitted to York University, the transfer credit team in the Office of Admissions will begin to assess your previous post-secondary studies for transfer credit opportunities.
Transfer Credit Assessment is multi-step process.
- You’ve been admitted to York University – congratulations!
- Your transcripts are assessed for potential transfer credit. This is the amount of credit you will potentially receive, including courses listed on the transcript that are currently in progress. This potential transfer credit amount will be included in your Admission Decision Letter.
- Once you accept your offer of admission, we can begin to fully assess your previous studies for credit eligibility. A member of the transfer credit team may request additional information during this process.
- We will produce a Statement of Transfer Credit for you, which shows the amount of credit you have been granted, any course exclusions/waivers that have been granted and further instructions if we require additional details.
PLEASE NOTE: any courses in progress will only be counted when you receive a final grade.
- Your Statement of Transfer Credit will be made available to you in your MyFile account. To determine if your previous courses are eligible for York degree course exclusions, we may require detailed course outlines/syllabi. An example of an acceptable outline can be found on the Course Outline Example web page.
- All assessments are conditional upon receipt of final official transcripts.
Find eligibility requirements below.
- Academic studies completed at an accredited post-secondary institute will be considered for transfer credit. Continuing education courses are generally not eligible for transfer credit. Professional development programs/courses and studies completed at private career colleges are not eligible for transfer credit consideration.
- Transfer credit assessment is done on a case-by-case basis. The type of institution attended, overall GPA, grades achieved in each course and minimum credit value/course hours in individual courses are all taken into consideration. Minimum requirements for transfer credit eligibility may differ from minimum requirements for admission to a program. Find information about admission requirements on the Admission Requirements web page.
- Courses that are repeated will only count once for transfer credits.
- To be eligible for credit and course exclusions, individual courses must contain a minimum credit value equivalent to a 3-credit course at York University.
- Computer science, computer security, information technology, kinesiology and courses within the commerce programs (ADMS) must have been taken within the last 5 years to be considered for course exclusions, or as a pre-requisite for a degree course.
- The maximum credit that can be granted towards a 4-year honours degree is 90 credits (60 credits if admitted to a 3-year degree).
- Find out more about eligibility by visiting the Eligibility for Transfer Credit web page.
- If you are transferring to an engineering program at York University, the following courses are not eligible for transfer credit:
- courses with the CIVL, ENG and MECH rubrics;
- courses with the EECS and ESSE rubrics that are required for any of the engineering programs; and
- the course MATH 2930.
Courses with the MATH, CHEM and PHYS rubrics, as well as foundational science courses and complementary studies courses are eligible for transfer credit up to a maximum of 30 credits.
