Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries for Incoming Students

York University offers a variety of scholarships and awards that recognize academic excellence, resilience and community leadership. Some financial awards require that you submit an application for consideration, while other entrance awards are automatically assessed and awarded at the time of your admission.

To determine your eligibility and explore your options for scholarships, awards and financial aid, please select the sentence below which best describes you:

YORK ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP & AWARDS

York University awards over $20M in entrance scholarships and awards annually, a number of which are renewable. A sample of the numerous entrance scholarships, awards and bursaries available to Canadian high-school applicants are listed in the following table.

You are a high school applicant if:

  • You are less than 21 years old by the end of the calendar year in which you are admitted to the University (e.g. applicants admitted for a Fall term must be less than 21 years old by December 31 of that calendar year); and
  • You have been out of full-time high school studies for less than two years from your high school graduation date; and
  • You have not attempted studies at an accredited college or university.

For awards requiring an application, the Scholarships and Awards application link is accessible in MyFile starting on December 1. You do not need to have received an offer of admission or to have accepted an offer of admission to apply for scholarships, awards and bursaries. You simply need to have applied to a program at York University and have been issued a York student number.

Complete the application early as some scholarships have an application deadline as early as February 15. For all others, the application closes April 1. If you are selected as a recipient of a York entrance scholarship/award, you will be notified by e-mail or letter; the notification will include the name, value and terms and conditions of the award (if applicable). York University Automatic Entrance Scholarship

Based on final admission average:

Many high school applicants are admitted and offered entrance scholarships based on mid-year or "in-progress" results when their admission average is at or above 80%. All Entrance Scholarship amounts and eligibility are confirmed/finalized based on final grades.

95%+ (42-45 IB diploma points) — $3,500
90-94.9% (36-41 IB diploma points) — $2,000
85-89.9% (33-35 IB diploma points) — $1,500
80-84.9% (30-32 IB diploma points) — $1,000
No award application required

This scholarship is renewable at all tiers based on grade point average and course load requirements. To renew York University Automatic Entrance Scholarship, recipients must maintain a minimum 8.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) over a minimum of 24 credits taken during the entire academic year (previous Summer and Fall/Winter sessions).

Schulich Leader Scholarship

York University is proud to be one of only 20 Canadian universities to participate in the Schulich Leader Scholarship program. This prestigious scholarship allows promising entrepreneurial-minded students to pursue their dreams and become the next global pioneers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) areas of study. Recipients of these scholarships must demonstrate:

  • Entrepreneurial mindset (demonstrating leadership, charisma and creativity).
  • Strong consideration will be given to students with financial need
  • Intend to pursue a career in one or more of the following focus areas:
    1. Technology
    2. Engineering
    3. Entrepreneurship and business enterprise
    4. Applied scientific research

Scholarships are valued at $100,000 ($25,000 x 4 years) for student(s) admitted to Science, Technology or Mathematics programs of study and at $120,000 ($30,000 x 4 years of study) for student(s) admitted to an Engineering program in the Lassonde School of Engineering. In addition to this large financial award, they join an elite network and benefit from student enrichment opportunities throughout the year. This scholarship is open to Canadian citizens studying at high school or CEGEP in Canada.

YORK ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

Scholarships and awards for international students are limited and you should be prepared to support yourself throughout your studies at York.

Awards which do not require an application are noted with "no award application required" — you are automatically considered for them.

For awards requiring an application, complete and submit the International Student Scholarship & Award Application form by January 26, 2026 at 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

You are a high school applicant if:

  • You are less than 21 years old by the end of the calendar year in which you are admitted to the University (e.g. applicants admitted for a Fall term must be less than 21 years old by December 31 of that calendar year); and
  • You have been out of full-time high school studies for less than two years from your high school graduation date; and
  • You have not attempted studies at an accredited college or university.

Terms and Conditions:

  • All undergraduate international students are required to pay the $2,000 non-refundable acceptance deposit regardless of scholarship status.
  • To maintain scholarship eligibility, students must have: a) accepted their offer of admission by the deadline indicated in their offer letter, b) have satisfied all outstanding admission conditions within 30 days of the start of the applicable term, and c) be enrolled full-time in a York University undergraduate program.
  • International entrance scholarships/awards are applicable to students paying international tuition rates only; York reserves the right to revoke or discontinue the scholarship if the recipient’s tuition category changes to domestic.
  • Scholarship offers will be automatically deferred for applicants who defer their admission to the Winter 2027. Applicants who elect to defer their admission beyond the 2026-2027 academic year, will be subject to the scholarship program in effect at the new point of admission.
  • The President’s International Scholarship of Excellence cannot be held in conjunction with the York International Scholarship of Distinction International, the York International Merit Award International, the York International Merit Award International and the York International Transfer Award International.

International Scholarships and Awards Requiring an Application

York University is committed to giving a broad demographic of students access to a high quality, research-intensive learning environment committed to the public good. International students who attend York University have access to a wide variety of supports, academic, financial, and otherwise to help them in meeting their academic goals.

Awards Amount
President’s International Scholarship of Excellence
A select number of these scholarships are awarded per year, valued at $45,000/year. It is renewable for an additional three years of full-time undergraduate study if the student maintains good academic standing each year, bringing it to a total of $180,000 over four years.

To be considered for this this award, you must submit the International Student Scholarship & Award Application. This award is for applicants with an exceptional academic profile, and who demonstrate leadership through community service or excellence in the arts or sport. Students do not need an offer of admission to apply for York entrance awards and scholarships.

Important dates:
The Fall/Winter 2026-2027 application will open on November 1,  2025.
Student Application Deadline: January 26, 2026
Nomination Deadline: February 4, 2026

Note: A 9-digit York reference number is required, which you will receive within 5 business days of applying to York. Ensure that you submit your application for admission well in advance of the scholarship application deadline January 26, 2026.

The Annie Demirjian’77 Scholarship

Awarded to two (2) international applicants who are admitted to Glendon with top academic standing (of 85% or higher) and demonstrate financial need. Preference will be given to applicants who are Francophone.  Glendon applicants will automatically be considered for this award if they apply for the President’s International Scholarship of Excellence.

The following section lists resources specific to Indigenous applicants. 

BAND FUNDING

If you are a First Nations (status), Métis or Inuit student, you may be eligible for postsecondary financial support to help offset the costs of tuition, books and supplies, travel and living expenses. Given that each Band, Tribal Council or other funding agency has its own postsecondary policy, you will need to contact your Band or Tribal Council directly. The Indigenous Initiatives Lead of the Centre for Indigenous Student Services, Dayna Towers, can assist you during this process. Contact Dayna at dtowers@yorku.ca.

How to apply for Band funding:

  • Contact the Education Counsellor at your local Band office to have a postsecondary education application package sent to you.
  • Carefully read the policy and guidelines. Complete and send out the application before the required deadline.
  • Your Band office will inform you if you have been approved. Follow through with any additional requests from the Band.

If you receive Band funding, your tuition fees will be paid directly to the University by a third party (your Band). Submit your sponsorship letter to Student Financial Services at the time of your enrolment. You must pay your registration deposit within five business days of enrolling in courses to maintain your enrolment status; York will then bill the third party for the balance of your fees. In some cases, your Band may also set up an account for you at the York University Bookstore to pay for your textbook costs.

YORK INDIGENOUS ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

Entrance scholarships, awards and bursaries available to Indigenous applicants are listed in the following table. For awards requiring an application, submit the application via MyFile as noted below. You do not need an offer of admission to submit the scholarships, awards and bursaries application in MyFile. Complete the application early so that you are considered for the most awards possible. The application closes April 1. If you qualify for one of these awards listed, you will receive an e-mail or letter letting you know the name of the scholarship or award you have received and the value.   • Available to status and non-status undergraduate students of Indigenous ancestry who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons and are residents of Ontario who demonstrate financial need
  • The bursary is renewable for a maximum of three additional years provided the student maintains a cumulative grade point average of 5.00 (C+) and enrolment in a minimum of 18 credits

Undergraduate Entrance Awards Timelines

Incoming domestic students – Ontario students or students from out-of-province

Applicants are considered for scholarships and entrance awards based on a variety of criteria and final grades.

If you are entering a direct-entry undergraduate program directly from high school, you will be automatically considered for entrance scholarships. Funding is automatically applied and renewable at all levels.

Other entrance awards require an application, which can be found in the MyFile application portal. Details on how and when to apply can be found below.

December 1 to April 1
As an incoming student, complete the Scholarships and Awards application in MyFile. All required supporting documents are to be submitted by email to FAAS@yorku.ca. Please note: Some awards have an application deadline of February 15. For more information, visit the Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries for Incoming Students webpage.
May to June
You will be notified by email if you have been selected as a recipient. Awards for all recipients will be reflected in MyFile starting in June. Award decisions will be communicated by email for all applicants.
Mid-August
Awards will be applied to your York Student Account and will be reflected on your August statement.

Incoming international students

Applicants are considered for scholarships and entrance awards based on a variety of criteria and final grades.

International students will automatically be considered for a number of entrance scholarships based on your final admission average. In addition, there are some awards that require an application. International applicants apply on the International Scholarships and Awards application. Details on how and when to apply can be found below.

November 1, 2026
The International Scholarships and Awards application opens.
November 2, 2026 to January 27, 2027

Applicants submit their award applications. The last date to submit applications for incoming international student awards is January 27, 2027.

Please note: Your York reference number is required to submit an award application. This is provided within 4-5 business days after you have submitted your application to York through the acknowledgment email from York University. It is recommended that you complete your admission application by January 19, 2027. Applications submitted after this date may not be eligible for certain awards, such as the President’s International Scholarship of Excellence, since a York reference number would not available before the scholarship deadline.

February 4, 2027
If an award requires a nomination as part of the application, nominations must be submitted by this date.
March 2027
Award decisions for incoming students are communicated by email to all applicants.
Mid-August 2027
Awards will be applied to your York Student Account and will be reflected on your August statement.

Funding is applied to your student account at different times and may not align with tuition fee deadlines (e.g., September 10 and January 10). To avoid interest charges, it is strongly recommended that you pay any required fees by the applicable due date.

All scholarships and awards are subject to eligibility requirements, available funding, and review processes, including financial need assessment where applicable. Meeting basic eligibility criteria does not guarantee an award. Timelines shown are estimates and may vary based on application volume and assessment outcomes.
