As an international student, you may be eligible to work in Canada while studying and after you graduate. As a study permit holder, you may qualify to work on-campus or off-campus without an additional work permit if you meet specific criteria. A study permit is a document that allows you to stay and study in Canada. You may also be eligible to work under the conditions of your study permit. A visa is a travel document, like a TRV or eTA. You must have a valid visa to be able to enter Canada. We know there is a lot to get ready, so we’ve made a list of some essential things for international students as you begin preparations to start your studies. Whether you arrive in the Summer, Fall or Winter, York International will host an International Orientation Day where you can go shopping for essentials, meet your peers, get your bank account set up, and learn all about the supports available to you on and off campus.

Your Faculty will also host a set of welcome events for you and the team at Student Community Leadership and Development will have lots of fun social activities available for you to participate in during Orientation Week. Check out York's Orientation website for more information.

If you live on campus in one of the undergraduate buildings, you will have a dedicated upper year mentor, called a House Don, who is available to answer your questions, invite you to events, and someone you can talk to when you need help!

International students can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit and stay to work in Canada for up to three years after they finish their degree.
